Gobindaganj Pourashava is a populous and commercial based area under Gaibandha district. Besides this, it is the gateway of northern eight districts including the two greater districts Rangpur and Dinajpur. On 25 August 1998, Government declared this rural area as town and established a Pourashava considering the geographical and commercial importance of Gobindagnj. In the past, the commercial centers which were built up on the bank of the river Korotoa got familiarity as Ganj especially during Mogul period. The word Ganj is added with the name of the last king Gobinda of Pundravardhan kingdom of Northern Region and this area is named after his name as Gobindaganj.
